The first place a snake starts its shed is around the eyes. This is your vision, perception, and the lens that you view your life through. This is the first death that must occur before any skin is left behind, and here, you are going to wash your eyes clean of all the ways you have been seeing your life through glasses that you've outgrown.

The snake splits the skin at the mouth, which begins the actual process of shedding. This is where you unweave all the ways you have been speaking spells over yourself and your life, and learn to speak in a language that your tongue actually wants to touch. The mind must rest so the gnosis of the body can come online, otherwise you will leave behind fragments, not a skin.
